The extreme metal act Apiary watched its album Lost in Focus acquire an unwelcome layer of irony once the founding lineup began to dissolve. Successive replacements arrived until virtually none of the original members remained, making a new identity unavoidable. Vocalist Makh Daniels, guitarist Chris Brock, bassist Tyler Jensen, and drummer Dan Sneddon regrouped under the moniker Early Graves, an unforgiving juggernaut of a band that injected early punk attitude and the dirty crust sound into the world of metal. In 2008 the San Francisco-based group traveled to Nashville, TN, to work with producer and former Today Is the Day member Steve Austin on its first album. Issued the same year through Ironclad, a Metal Blade imprint, We: The Guillotine featured a guest appearance from Eugene Robinson from the loud avant outfit Oxbow. Two years later the band delivered Goner. A nationwide summer tour with the Funeral Pyre was under way when the group’s van lost control, crashed, and rolled in Oregon, where Makh Daniels was pronounced dead at the scene.
