Originating as the solo endeavor of Toronto musician Warren Hildebrand, founder of Orchid Tapes, Foxes in Fiction first served as a channel for dreamy sound collages before developing into a fuller ambient-pop vision. Hildebrand, born in Toronto, launched the project in 2005 during the second year of high school, initially presenting trippy sound collages and ambient soundscapes. The 2010 debut full-length Swung from the Branches reflected that early emphasis. In those formative years Hildebrand issued material at a brisk pace, turning out EPs, limited cassettes, 7" singles, and numerous tracks offered as free downloads online. Orchid Tapes meanwhile established itself as a platform for notable acts including Elvis Depressedly, Ricky Eat Acid, and Alex G. The second album, Ontario Gothic, appeared in 2014; its seven tracks moved toward conventional songwriting, addressing themes of loss through lo-fi production and intimate shoegaze textures. By then Hildebrand had relocated from Toronto to New York, and the move, together with its self-destructive undercurrents, informed the third album Trillium Killer. Recorded in the artist’s home studio between 2017 and 2019, the release showcased the widest range yet, merging glowing dream pop, ambient atmospheres, loungey pop, and vocal manipulations that portrayed distinct characters inside the compact universe of the songs. Orchid Tapes released Trillium Killer in October 2019.
