Biography
Chicago's Friko fuse post-punk, chamber pop, and exuberant indie rock through an exploratory lens. Their first full-length effort, the 2024 release Where we've been, Where we go from here, delivered an intense experience built on intimate melodies, layered ensemble singing, and indelible hooks.
Niko Kapetan on vocals and guitar alongside Luke Stamos on bass have known each other since kindergarten and came of age in the Chicago suburbs; they encountered drummer Bailey Minzenberger during high school. Throughout their teenage years the three musicians performed in multiple groups, with Kapetan and Minzenberger each handling several instruments. Friko officially formed in 2019 and quickly secured shows at the Empty Bottle and Schubas Tavern. Their home-recorded, self-issued Whenever Forever EP first surfaced on cassette in March 2022, after which the band made its festival bow at Bonnaroo the next year.
By the August 2023 arrival of the single “Crimson to Chrome” b/w “IN_OUT,” the lineup had narrowed to the Kapetan-Minzenberger duo amid mounting coverage from indie outlets. The pair tracked their debut album, which contains “Crimson to Chrome,” primarily in live takes under producer Scott Tallarida at Trigger Chicago. The resulting Where we've been, Where we go from here appeared on the ATO label in February 2024, its artwork underscoring stark contrasts between quieter ballads and high-energy rock numbers.
