Hailing from Florida, flipturn specializes in indie rock defined by abundant hooks, rich textures, forward momentum, and emotional intensity. After issuing several studio EPs during the late 2010s as they cultivated an audience through performances, the group issued its first full-length album, Shadowglow, in 2022. Several appearances at prominent American festivals came ahead of the next release, Burnout Days, which arrived in 2024.

The band, whose name derives from a swimming technique, originated in 2015 in Fernandina Beach, Florida, when teenagers Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), and Madeline Jarman (bass) formed the project. Their initial self-released EP, Heavy Colors, came out in 2017 and was followed a year later by Citrona. National headline tours were underway once the third EP, Something You Needed, appeared in 2020 alongside drummer Adrian Walker.

For the debut album, flipturn stabilized around the core of Basse, Duncan, Jarman, Mitch Fountain (synth/guitar), and Devon VonBalson (drums). Jon Gilbert (Mt. Joy, Adam Melchor) handled production on Shadowglow, which Dualtone Records, based in Nashville, released in August 2022. The band played marquee events that year including Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. A deluxe edition of Shadowglow containing live versions and additional material surfaced in mid-2023.

Between road dates, the group tracked its second album at Sonic Ranch Studios in Texas outside El Paso, working with producer Chad Copelin (Colony House, Sasha Alex Sloan). Burnout Days was introduced in September 2024 via the introspective lead single “Rodeo Clown.” The album appeared on Dualtone the following January.
