Denmark's rock outfit Gasolin' earned a reputation as the local counterpart to the Beatles and stands as the most successful musical act the country has ever produced. Kim Larsen, Franz Beckerlee, and Wili Jonsson came together to launch the group in 1969, initially focusing on English songs including the 1970 tracks "Silky Sally," "Child of the Institution," and "Johnny the Jackpot." After failing to gain the desired traction or recognition, the musicians switched to Danish lyrics, which sparked an instant surge in their fanbase. Their first album, simply titled Gasolin', arrived in 1971 to strong acclaim. Follow-up efforts such as Gasolin' 2 and Gasolin' 3 propelled them to the top of the Danish pop scene, where they ruled the airwaves and headlined major local stages.

In an effort to break through abroad during the 1970s, Gasolin' issued English versions of their records and performed in British venues. While they achieved legendary status domestically, the frustrations of not penetrating the English-speaking world led to internal conflicts that prompted their dissolution in the early 1980s. Singer Kim Larsen launched his own path with the 1984 release Midt Om Natten, which ranks among the all-time highest sellers in Denmark. Various Gasolin' anthologies have appeared over the years, beginning with Supermix in 1980 and extending to the 2003 collection Black Box as well as Masser af Succes in 2009. Anders Ostergaard's prize-winning documentary Gasolin'-4-Ever chronicled their journey, sparking fresh enthusiasm for the band's legacy and songs.
