Gnags originated in 1966 in Skjern, Denmark, as a durable rock ensemble whose core sound has absorbed shifting influences ranging from synth pop and reggae to adult contemporary textures while remaining anchored in rock & roll. Brothers Peter A.G. Nielsen on vocals and Jens G. Nielsen on drums formed the group, with Peter remaining the sole uninterrupted member across decades of personnel shifts. After relocating to Aarhus in 1971, the band issued its first album, På Vej, in 1973 and followed two years later with Del af en Ring on the Genlyd imprint.

A long string of subsequent Genlyd releases sustained the partnership, among them Burhøns in 1979, Intercity in 1980, Safari in 1982, X in 1983, Den Blå Hund in 1984, and Har de Puttet Noget I Kaffen? in 1987, along with Lygtemandens Sang in 1991, Øjne på Stilke in 1994, and Gösta Hammerfedt in 1996. The label later compiled the career-spanning box set Siden 66 in 2005. The original lineup reconvened for a one-off concert in 2013.

Throughout the twenty-first century Gnags have continued to thrive domestically, placing Skønhedspletter from 2002, Legepladsen from 2008, Nørd from 2017, Robot 'n' Roll from 2019, and På Ryggen af en Drøm from 2022 inside the Danish Top Ten and, in several cases, the Top Five.
