Kim Larsen stands among the most commercially dominant and critically esteemed figures in Danish rock history. He first gained widespread attention through his role in Gasolin', the 1970s ensemble widely viewed as Denmark's foremost contribution to the rock repertoire. During the 1980s he maintained a consistent presence on domestic charts via the ensemble Kim Larsen & Bellami, then continued that trajectory from the 1990s onward with Kim Larsen & Kjukken until his death in 2018.

Born in Copenhagen on October 23, 1945, Larsen joined Franz Beckerlee, Wili Jønsson, and Søren Berlev in 1969 to form Gasolin'. The group quickly emerged as the preeminent force in Danish pop and rock, issuing nine albums between 1971 and 1978 while preserving its stature by never reuniting for performances beyond occasional interviews. Although Larsen issued a solo recording in 1973, his individual path accelerated only after Gasolin' dissolved. Beginning in 1978 he produced a continuous series of solo projects whose commercial performance matched the totals previously achieved by his former band. The 1983 release Midt Om Natten (Middle of the Night) set a new national benchmark, surpassing 500,000 copies and becoming the best-selling album in Danish history up to that point.

In the late 1980s Larsen assembled Kim Larsen & Bellami, which delivered four albums from 1986 through 1992. He returned to solo work with 1994's Hvem Kan Sige Nej Til en Engel? (Who Can Say No to an Angel?) before launching Kim Larsen & Kjukken, whose self-titled debut appeared in 1996. Alongside Kjukken he maintained an active output of favorably received recordings, culminating in eight projects issued between 1996 and the 2006 album Gammel Hankat (Old Tomcat). In 2007 the same lineup achieved a number-one position with the live set En Lille Pose Støj.

The ensemble sustained its momentum into the following decade, releasing the studio albums Du Glade Verden in 2012 and Øst For Vesterled in 2017. While touring in support of the latter, Larsen received a prostate-cancer diagnosis. He died at his residence in Odense during September 2018.
