Biography
Hailing from Denmark, the alternative rock group Magtens Korridorer fuse the emotionally turbulent and expansive melodic grunge of bands like Pearl Jam with the introspective indie rock that defined much of the 2000s. Emerging in 1995 while studying at the University of Copenhagen, the ensemble first entered the charts in 2005 via their platinum-certified second album, Friværdi, which landed at number 11 on the Danish listings. From that point forward they established themselves as regulars inside the national Top Five, climbing to number two with Det Krøllede Håb in 2007, Før Alting Bliver Nat in 2014, and their eighth studio effort, Club Promise, released in 2021. On the latter they tempered their guitar-centric anthems with sporadic electronic textures and dance-rock accents.
Assembled at the University of Copenhagen in 1995, Magtens Korridorer gained early momentum after “Hestevisen,” taken from a 1996 demo, aired on the popular national public radio program Tæskeholdet. The initial roster—commanding lead vocalist Johan Olsen, guitarists Rasmus Kern and Jacob Ihlemann, bassist Henrik Dylmer, and drummer Peter Bregnsbo—promptly recorded their self-produced debut, Bagsiden af Medaljen, which appeared in 1998 and received modest attention, prompting a seven-year gap before the next full-length.
The band compensated for the extended silence with Friværdi, produced by Rune Westberg and issued in 2005. Anchored by the alternative hit “Lorteparforhold,” the album reflected major lineup shifts, now featuring Olsen alongside Kern, guitarist Niklas Schneidermann, bassist Terkel Møhl, and drummer Anders Ramhede—a configuration that stabilized for years. Friværdi reached number 11 on Denmark’s album chart, and the group performed at the following year’s Roskilde Festival; a 2006 reissue on Universal added four extra tracks.
Building on their major-label breakthrough, they delivered the number-two-charting Det Krøllede Håb in 2007, helmed by producer Marco Manieri of the Confusions and the Ark. Their first Top 20 single arrived in 2009 with “Milan Allé,” the title track of their fourth album; the Per Sunding-produced Milan Allé LP climbed to number three. Imperiet Falder (“The Empire Falls”) followed in 2011 and peaked at number five, staying true to their melodic post-grunge approach under the band’s own production alongside Søren Mikkelsen. The greatest-hits collection Spil Noget Vi Kender! (“Play Something We Know!”) surfaced on Universal in 2012 and also entered the Top Three, while the live document Smukfest 2012 reached the Danish Top 20 a year later.
Magtens Korridorer’s second Top 20 single, “Giv Mig en Dag,” appeared on 2014’s Før Alting Bliver Nat (“Before Everything Becomes Night”), their fifth straight Top Five studio album at home, where it attained number two. Production credits on the release were shared by the band, Mikkelsen, and Carsten Heller, known for work with Kim Wilde and Frida Gold. Their seventh album, Halvt til Helt, arrived in 2018 and debuted at number four, recorded with Mikkelsen and veteran metal musician Jacob Hansen of Anubis Gate and Pyramaze.
After more than 25 years together—at least 16 with the same core lineup—Magtens Korridorer opened the new decade with Club Promise in 2021. Slightly softening their hard-rock edge, the set incorporated electronic elements and dance-rock inflections thanks to Swedish producer Zed Smon, also known as Zmago Simon of Kent and Baby Chaos. Listeners embraced the adjustments, sending the album to number two in Denmark. The EP Nødudgang followed in 2022 alongside an extensive Danish tour, and the band resumed live dates in 2024.
