Biography
New York-based rapper and producer HDBeenDope channels the distinctive style, energy, and spirit of his city into a high-confidence brand of hip-hop that stands apart from prevailing trends. This approach placed his upbeat tracks on major video game soundtracks, including EA Sports' Madden NFL 21, NBA 2K, and EA's UFC, while also drawing the interest of Jay-Z's Roc Nation, which signed the artist in 2022. His initial output for the label was the 2022 EP What Can They Say, later expanded into a full album in 2023 that incorporated additional material featuring Fergie Baby and Connie Diiamond.
Raised in New York, HDBeenDope (born Darius Henry) drew inspiration from the city's deep hip-hop legacy, particularly the work of Jay-Z, Nas, and Notorious B.I.G. He began rapping at age nine and turned to production and original music creation at sixteen, sharing early material online. His sharp, lyrical delivery and classic boom-bap-inflected sound quickly gained traction, leading to the release of his debut album, 2016's PHeace Be the Journey. Subsequent singles such as "Double Up," "Rev Run," and "New Year Theme Music" paved the way for the tougher, trap-leaning 2019 track "Byrd." His second album, BrokeN Dreams, arrived the next year and merged the East Coast hip-hop aesthetic of his prior work with the stripped-down trap approach of his newer releases. Selected as a contender for the tenth position on XXL Magazine's 2020 Freshman class, HDBeenDope continued building momentum as his songs accumulated tens of millions of streams. The 2021 singles "21 Bags," "Best Out," and "ReallyMite" followed, with the last of these produced in collaboration with multi-platinum producer Earl on the Beat.
After joining Roc Nation, HDBeenDope issued his first track for the imprint in September 2022, the powerful and celebratory "Wake Em Up." This preceded the October arrival of the What Can They Say EP, which included contributions from Dizzy Banko and Tracy Dashh. Positive responses from listeners and media prompted further releases under the label's support. In June 2023 the project was expanded with new tracks and issued as a complete album.
