Sweden's Hearts & Colors began as an indie folk duo whose members specialized in close harmony singing. Their breakthrough arrived in late 2016 after electronic DJ and producer Andrelli supplied a remix of the track "Lighthouse." The pair subsequently pursued a fuller, electronically driven pop direction, issuing a consistent series of singles that gained traction on streaming services, notably 2017's "For the Love" and 2018's "L.A. on a Saturday Night."

Philip Tillström and Nicolai Kjellberg, longtime friends, had first collaborated in 2014, placing their expansive vocal harmonies over acoustic renditions of well-known songs by One Direction, Justin Bieber, and Bruno Mars before posting the results on music-sharing platforms. Originally an acoustic piano ballad included on the 2016 EP Prologue, "Lighthouse" achieved chart success in Sweden, Norway, and additional European territories once Andrelli transformed it into a downtempo dance version. Departing from their acoustic origins, the duo resurfaced in early 2017 with the polished, EDM-inflected singles "For the Love" and "Shame." They next contributed vocals to German producer Felix Jaehn's "Like a Riddle" and reunited with Andrelli on 2018's "Yung Luv." Further singles continued to appear throughout the rest of that year, among them "L.A. on a Saturday Night." The 2019 release "Lion" extended the duo's later smooth-pop approach, whereas the acoustic number "I Don't Care" returned to the guitar-based textures and harmonies that had marked their earliest work.
