Hesitation Wounds emerged as an especially ferocious hardcore punk outfit fronted by Jeremy Bolm, the ragged-voiced singer from Touché Amoré, and drew its remaining personnel from the Hope Conspiracy, Trap Them, and Gouge Away. Listeners responded quickly to the group’s punishing debut album Awake for Everything, issued in 2016, and the band returned three years afterward with the equally ferocious Chicanery.

Bolm launched the project as a side endeavor guided by a straightforward idea: assemble several musicians from groups he respected, generate heavy material in short order, and issue the results without delay. The approach proved immediately effective in May 2012 when he convened guitarist Neeraj Kane of the Hope Conspiracy and the Suicide File, bassist Stephen Lacour of Trap Them and True Cross, and drummer Jay Weinberg of Against Me! and Slipknot; together the four composed enough songs for an EP within hours and tracked them the following day. Their self-titled EP appeared in April 2013, its massive hardcore sound reflecting the combined pedigree of its members and attracting an enthusiastic audience. After each participant resumed work with their main bands, the same musicians later reassembled and completed an entire full-length in three days. Deathwish Inc. released that album, Awake for Everything, in 2016; the record delivered abrasive and passionate songs whose lyrics moved between personal and political turmoil. Following another hiatus, Hesitation Wounds experienced its first personnel shift when Thomas Cantwell of Gouge Away took over on drums for Weinberg, who had departed to join Slipknot. The revised lineup tracked and issued the concise yet forceful Chicanery LP in August 2019.
