Biography
Taking cues from American hardcore and speed metal, Trash Talk formed in California as a versatile crossover thrash skatepunk outfit defined by an uncompromising sound. The band surfaced in 2005 and put out a run of well-received underground releases before becoming the first non-hip-hop act signed to Odd Future Records, which issued their fourth full-length, the Billboard-charting 119, in 2012. By 2020 they had incorporated song interludes and distorted sampling into their approach on the consistently ferocious Kenny Beats-produced EP Squalor.
The Sacramento-based hardcore revivalists—vocalist Lee Spielman, guitarist Garrett Stevenson, bassist Spencer Pollard, and drummer Sam Bosson—had already been performing together for two years when Rumble Records issued their debut recording, Plagues: Walking Disease, in 2007. Persistent touring and high-energy performances generated considerable attention, while key friendships further boosted their profile. Before delivering their next two albums—a self-titled 2008 release and 2010’s Eyes & Nines on their own Trash Talk Collective imprint—they put out a 7" featuring guest vocals from Keith Morris of Off! and Black Flag renown. Ties to like-minded skaters and enthusiasts in Cerebral Ballzy and Odd Future paved the way for a spot on Odd Future Records, where 2012’s 119 broadened their audience and confirmed their status as the label’s first non-hip-hop signing.
Sam Bosson departed in 2013; Devan Bentley handled drums for that year’s touring dates, while Thomas Pridgen supplied the rhythms on the 2014 album No Peace. Trash Talk resurfaced two years afterward with the unexpected EP Tangle, then released another EP, Squalor, in 2020. The latter was produced by Kenny Beats, widely recognized for his contributions to hip-hop artists including Denzel Curry, slowthai, and Rico Nasty.
