Emerging from the U.K. as a self-reliant punk outfit marked by disenfranchisement, Gallows channel fury and disdain for their environment in the vein of predecessors Sex Pistols and the Clash, injecting authentic drive into the punk resurgence. The lineup came together in 2005, consisting of vocalist Frank Carter, guitarist and vocalist Steph Carter, multi-instrumentalist Laurent Barnard on guitars, keys, and vocals, bassist Stuart Gili-Ross, and drummer Lee Barratt, following immersion in 1980s hardcore acts such as Black Flag and Minor Threat alongside lesser-known groups including Swing Kids and JR Ewing. With a natural, fierce screaming delivery, Frank Carter tackles hazardous subjects including date rape, street violence, and internal boiling tensions through his lyrics. On a shoestring budget, the group issued their first full-length Orchestra of Wolves via the Nottingham-based In at the Deep End Records in September 2006. Following a performance at SXSW in Austin during March 2007, Gallows landed a contract with Epitaph Records, prompting plans for a North American reissue of the debut featuring three additional tracks that summer. The follow-up effort Grey Britain arrived two years afterward. In 2011, the ensemble declared the departure of frontman Carter, who was succeeded by Wade MacNeil from Alexisonfire; the newcomer's initial appearance came on the self-titled third album released in 2012. Further developing their approach, Gallows returned to a stripped-down garage punk aesthetic on the 2015 fourth album Desolation Sounds.
