Biography
Based in Dallas, the rapper and producer ian specializes in trap tracks built around hazy synth lines, pitch-corrected vocals, and terse punchlines. He began creating music toward the end of the 2010s and achieved sudden prominence in 2024 when his concise mixtape Valedictorian spread rapidly across the internet. Ahead of his first album, Goodbye Horses, issued later that year, he dropped the single “Fit Check” featuring VonOff1700.
Ian O'Neill Smith entered the world in St. Louis yet now lives in Dallas. He opened a SoundCloud account in 2018 under the handle suburbancerberus. Following an upload that compiled Chief Keef material, he started supplying beats to artists including Lil Xelly and Izaya Tiji. His debut appearance as an MC arrived in 2022 with the self-produced single “G63,” which he followed with additional standalone tracks and the EPs Only for a While and Remembrance. The EP Empty Suit surfaced in 2023. Although his earliest work leaned toward cloud rap and emo-rap territory, he shifted to a direct trap style on Valedictorian, his introductory mixtape. That project drew extensive online interest and reached number 54 on the Billboard 200. “Fit Check” featuring VonOff1700 arrived the next June. The Lil Yachty collaboration “Hate Me” marked ian’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. The track formed part of the album Goodbye Horses, which also contained a contribution from Chief Keef.
