California's Irontom emerged in 2012 as a high-spirited indie rock band whose music fuses arty post-punk and prog elements with psychedelic touches and funk-rock rhythms. The group formed in Malibu and consists of vocalist Harry Hayes, guitarist Zach Irons, keyboardist Daniel Saslow, bassist Dane Sandborg, and drummer Dylan Williams. Hayes and Irons—who is the son of Jack Irons, the former Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam drummer—had been close friends and musical collaborators for years before they linked up with Saslow, Sandborg, and Williams, Irons' own cousin. Drawing from a wide range of reference points that stretches from Talking Heads to Led Zeppelin, the band built an audience through energetic live performances across Los Angeles. Their first recordings were the EPs The Loose in 2012 and The Nitro in 2013, each produced by Alain Johannes of Queens of the Stone Age, Eleven, and Them Crooked Vultures.

By 2015 Irons and Saslow had started dividing their schedules between Irontom and Awolnation. The band's debut full-length album, Partners, arrived in 2017 with production handled by Aaron Bruno, the Awolnation frontman and one-time member of Under the Influence of Giants. The record contained the singles "Brain Go," "Hookers," and "Bold Like Elijah."
