Coast Modern emerged as a versatile pair hailing from Los Angeles, merging their relaxed California-style electronic pop with influences drawn from hip-hop, independent rock, and psychedelic pop. This project stems from the collaboration between Luke Atlas, originally from Seattle, and Coleman Trapp, who resides in L.A. Their initial encounter took place in 2013 while both were aspiring songwriters navigating the competitive music production environment of Southern California. Following a couple of years without achieving widespread success for their compositions, Trapp sought distance by moving to Denver in Colorado, where he started crafting personal material instead of chasing current trends. These experimental tracks were shared with Atlas, who incorporated production elements, leading to Atlas's return to Los Angeles and the formation of the group. Their debut release came as the single "Hollow Life" in 2015, earning enthusiastic critical acclaim along with likenesses to Grouplove, Cage the Elephant, Twenty One Pilots, and Alt-J. In 2016, they released another track titled "Animals," which coincided with appearances at SXSW as well as shared bills alongside Børns and the Temper Trap. During the summer of 2017, the self-titled full-length album arrived from the duo. Not long after, at the start of the next year, they put out their rendition of MGMT's song "Electric Feel."
