Biography
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, contemporary gospel singer and producer J. Moss belongs to a musically gifted family whose gospel lineage includes his father Bill of Bill Moss & the Celestials and a cousin who performed with the Clark Sisters. He later formed the Moss Brothers, a duo with his sibling Bill, which issued two albums and played regional dates before James left to attend Michigan State University. After just two years there he abandoned academics, convinced that his future lay in music, specifically in composition and production. A modest solo attempt upon his return to Detroit collapsed almost immediately, yet his membership in the production trio PAJAM—alongside Paul Allen and Walter Kearney—finally brought wider recognition. The team fused classic gospel elements with contemporary hip-hop and R&B textures to create numerous chart successes in the genre. In 2004 J. Moss again ventured out as a solo artist, this time drawing on material developed with his PAJAM colleagues; the resulting album, The J. Moss Project, appeared that year and achieved strong sales. He continued releasing under his own name, and in 2007, following a postponement, he issued the follow-up V2..., which ascended to the top of Billboard’s gospel chart. That breakthrough opened the door to a string of further recordings—Just James, V4…The Other Side, Grown Folks Gospel, and GFG Reload—that likewise reached number one on the same tally throughout the mid-2010s.
