Jaguar Love emerged as a West Coast indie rock trio in summer 2007, built around vocalist and pianist Johnny Whitney alongside guitarist and bassist Cody Votolato from the Blood Brothers and keyboardist, bassist, and drummer Jay Clark from Pretty Girls Make Graves. After living as neighbors in Seattle, Votolato and Clark first connected during joint tours between the Blood Brothers and Pretty Girls Make Graves. Once the idea of starting a fresh project surfaced, both relocated to Portland to link up with Whitney and begin composing material. Within months the group had laid down four tracks and begun shopping for label support. A short run of shows supporting Queens of the Stone Age preceded their January 2008 signing with Matador. The debut EP appeared in late spring, followed closely by the full-length album Take Me to the Sea that August. After Jay Clark departed, the remaining members reluctantly continued as an electro-pop duo. Following a period of regrouping and the launch of a clothing line, Whitney and Votolato issued the stylishly titled Hologram Jams on Fat Possum in March 2010.
