James Hype crafts garage and house productions by lifting vocal lines from rap and R&B recordings and reshaping them into electronic dance tracks. Years spent working as a DJ throughout the North of England preceded his 2016 breakthrough, which arrived when a remix of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” spread rapidly after being identified by a music-recognition app. BBC Radio 1 presenter Mistajam responded by booking the producer for an exclusive mix on his program. Early the following year Hype joined the Warner roster, and the label soon issued his collaboration with Kelli-Leigh, “More Than Friends.” By summer he had made his first appearances in Ibiza while also launching a weekly Kiss FM show in the U.K.
