Emerging in 1997 from a small community near Fort Wayne, Indiana, the punk-pop outfit Jettingham features Dave Schmoekel handling vocals, Gabe Berry on guitar, Jason Berry behind the drums, and Beav on bass. The group began under the name Abraham until the departure of their prior vocalist allowed Schmoekel—who already knew the members and belonged to another area act—to join, prompting the name adjustment. They put out a demo during 1999, with the song "Never, Never, Never" receiving airplay on WEJE, a station in the vicinity. The following year brought their first full-length album, Neato, which also gained traction locally on the radio and led to a deal with Republic/Universal. Their major-label effort, the self-titled Jettingham, arrived in September 2001, but ahead of that came an additional lift when "Cheating" appeared on the American Pie 2 film soundtrack.
