Miami-based producer John Summit has built a substantial presence in dance music with a body of work that moves between sleek, propulsive tech-house and vocal-led, melody-focused house, resulting in widespread festival bookings and multiple commercially dominant, widely streamed recordings. Active since the late 2010s, he first gained traction via the 2020 release “Deep End,” then added to his momentum with “Human” featuring Echoes, the Sofi Tukker collaboration “Sun Came Up,” and “La Danza.” In 2022 he established the label and event imprint Experts Only, formerly known as Off the Grid, and issued further material including “Revolution.” One of his strongest commercial peaks arrived with the 2023 single “Where You Are,” after which he delivered the trance cut “Fade Out.” His debut full-length, Comfort in Chaos, followed in 2024.

Born John Walter Schuster, he studied piano in childhood before electronic music captured his attention through a Lollapalooza visit and subsequent clandestine entries into clubs and after-parties. While completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois he taught himself production and DJing, then began issuing tracks under the John Summit name around 2017. After several years of digital-only output he committed to music on a full-time basis. That decision bore fruit when Defected put out “Deep End” in 2020, generating substantial streaming and sales figures. Additional 2021 releases included “Thin Line” with Guz, “Make Me Feel,” and “Sun Came Up” with Sofi Tukker. Near year’s end FFRR issued “Human” featuring Echoes, which crossed over to radio. He returned to Defected for “La Danza,” inaugurated the Off the Grid label with “In Chicago,” and supplied remixes for Kx5’s “Escape” (the deadmau5 and Kaskade project) and Kygo’s “Freeze.” Subsequent singles comprised “What a Life” with Guz featuring Stevie Appleton, “Show Me” featuring Hannah Boleyn, and “Revolution.”

Dance site EDM Train named him Artist of the Year at the close of 2022. The progressive-house track “Where You Are” featuring vocalist Hayla surfaced in 2023, rapidly ranking among his most streamed releases and earning a mention from Barack Obama as one of his favorite songs of the year. Summit then rebranded Off the Grid as Experts Only, issued multiple “Where You Are” remixes, and released the progressive-trance single “Fade Out” with MKLA. Further 2023 material included “Legacy” with Vltra and “Hungover” with Camden Cox and Mathame. Comfort in Chaos, his first album, appeared in 2024 and featured appearances from Kaskade, Sub Focus, Julia Church, and Elderbrook; it entered the Billboard 200 at number 39.
