Biography
Originating from South Dakota, Johnny Delaware crafts folk-rock narratives filled with sharp observation, delivered through a warm tone and sturdy elegance. He launched his solo path in 2013 yet soon aligned with the indie group SUSTO, which attained national prominence in the latter half of the decade. His wanderings carried him to Mexico, where he revived solo activity via the 2022 album Energy of Light. After completing one more record with SUSTO, he resurfaced in 2024 with the radiant, psychedelic-tinged Para Llevar.
Delaware established his footing in Charleston, South Carolina, shaping a roots-oriented folk-rock approach that merged atmospheric textures with a bright Laurel Canyon radiance. Secret Wave appeared near the close of 2013 and earned regional notice, though he chose instead to partner with fellow South Carolinian Justin Osborne in forming SUSTO. The band maintained an intensive touring schedule, issued albums through Rounder and New West Records, and appeared alongside acts such as the Lumineers and the Head and the Heart. Throughout this period the restless Delaware shifted residences repeatedly, living in Nashville, Albuquerque, Austin, Charleston, and briefly Mexico City.
While residing in Mexico amid the global pandemic, Delaware resumed his solo thread and completed Energy of Light. Issued independently in 2022, the varied collection blended eccentric psychedelic elements with sunny folk-rock, indie pop, and Americana. The following year SUSTO delivered its fifth album, My Entire Life, at which point Delaware had returned to Charleston. Drawing from his experiences in Mexico and the Southwest, he produced his third solo effort himself and performed the majority of the instruments. Poignant and atmospheric, Para Llevar arrived in late 2024.
