Biography
Jonah Yano first surfaced with Souvenir, his 2020 debut album on Innovative Leisure that fused smooth, jazz-inflected soul-pop with hip-hop rhythms and electronic textures. Two years later he returned with the more expansive Portrait of a Dog, an early-2023 release shaped in close collaboration with producer BadBadNotGood and weighted more heavily toward jazz improvisation.
Born in Hiroshima, Yano moved to Vancouver as a small child in 1998 after his parents separated, settling there with his mother. His grandmother placed him at the piano when he was six; he later added guitar and began composing original material. By 2016 he was capturing rough ideas on his phone, and after relocating to Toronto he began uploading tracks while absorbing the city’s vibrant local circuit, steadily sharpening his craft. His earliest documented credit arrived in 2018 as a featured vocalist on indie pop-rap duo Moneyphone’s “On Lock.” Soon afterward came his own first solo single, “Rolex, the Ocean,” which crystallized the airy, high-voiced style he has since refined—jazzy soul-pop draped over hip-hop beats. In 2019 he joined the Innovative Leisure roster and issued the Nervous EP, where further electronic elements appeared alongside contributions from labelmates BadBadNotGood.
The following year brought Souvenir, a full-length whose emotional core was “Shoes,” a track originally written and recorded in the ’90s by Yano’s father, Tatsuya Muraoka, and finished by the son after their reconciliation in 2019. Yano once again partnered with BadBadNotGood to co-produce Portrait of a Dog, a project that doubled as both family archive and breakup record while tilting his sound further into jazz and extended instrumental passages. Guests on the album reflected his broader palette and included rapper Slauson Malone alongside Montreal indie artist Sea Oleena.
