Biography
Joy Downer crafts textured, understated adult alternative pop that merges fragility with a lighthearted edge. Her sound incorporates synths and drum machines alongside guitars and live percussion, a palette first showcased on the 2017 debut EP Radio Dreamer. As the Los Angeles-based project of musician Joy Bishop, assisted by her husband Jeffrey Downer, that release was produced by Rob Kolar of Kolars and unveiled her wispy vocals along with an inventive, whimsical arranging style. The post-punk-tinged tracks “Plastic Wrap” and “Getaway Car” surfaced in the two years that followed, after which Bishop supplied the original theme “In the Water” for Netflix’s ten-episode series Spinning Out on New Year’s Day 2020. Her self-produced debut album, Paper Moon, appeared that June.
