Karnak

Formed in 1992 by André Abujamra, a former member of Os Mulheres Negras, Karnak fuses humorous pop songs with satirical takes on global styles sourced from Egypt, the Arab world, the Caribbean, the U.S., Africa, and Brazil, along with spoken-word samples drawn from speakers of those regions. The group has appeared on stages across Brazil as well as in the United States and, in 1998, before an audience of 10,000 in Montreal, Canada. Their debut album, Karnak (1995), was selected by a panel of Brazilian journalists as one of the fifteen most important Brazilian popular music recordings of the previous thirty years.
