Kenya Vaun fuses multiple strands of R&B into a sound shaped equally by her influences and her personal artistic choices. Rooted in Philadelphia, she pulls from the meticulous, sample-rich textures of 1960s and 1970s soul alongside the self-assured delivery of neo-soul voices that defined the 1990s and 2000s. Her first full-length project, The Honeymoon Phase, arrived in 2024 and showcases this generational synthesis through its lead tracks “Summer” and “Used To,” both of which underscore her distinct approach while signaling growing listener interest.

Born in Philadelphia, Vaun spent her early years in nearby Norristown. Her mother introduced her to the work of India.Arie, Lauryn Hill, Angie Stone, and Mary J. Blige, prompting her to pursue a similar path. Education remained her main focus, yet she still attracted underground notice with her debut release, the lighthearted 2018 single “Movie Night.”

In 2023 she paused her studies after signing with 300 Entertainment, where the nostalgic slow-burner “Summer” first drew wider attention. Built on a sample of Ahmad’s “Back in the Day,” itself drawn from Teddy Pendergrass’s “Love T.K.O.,” the track received endorsements from Joe Budden and Ebro across their respective podcasts and radio platforms. Producers Carvan & Ivan, the Philadelphia duo behind the original, then recruited their frequent collaborator Musiq Soulchild for a remix. The follow-up, “Used To,” reworked Billy Stewart’s “Sitting in the Park” with notable impact and supplied the blueprint for The Honeymoon Phase, which appeared in 2024.
