Biography
Producers Jim Bastow and Will Weeks launched the U.K. electronic duo KOAN Sound in 2008 once several earlier projects had come to an end. Their emerging aesthetic drew on formative electronic touchstones such as Amon Tobin and the Prodigy, shaping a palette defined by shadowy atmospheres, deliberate spatial drama, and pronounced low-end weight. Initial material leaned heavily into dubstep, a direction underscored by the self-released 2011 EP Free. Later that year the Max Out EP appeared on Inspected Records and the Funk Blaster EP surfaced on Skrillex’s OWSLA imprint; both steered the duo toward glitch-driven rhythms and funk-inflected electronica. In 2012 KOAN Sound joined the Full Flex Express tour, performing across Europe and North America alongside Skrillex, Diplo, and additional acts. A steady stream of remixes and singles accompanied further EPs, among them The Adventures of Mr. Fox in 2012, the 2013 collaboration Sanctuary with longtime associate Asa, and Dynasty in 2014.
