Kofi Flexxx emerged as a musical fusion project founded and steered by the disguised multi-instrumentalist and composer Shabaka Hutchings, known from Shabaka and the Ancestors, the Comet Is Coming, and Sons of Kemet. Hutchings anchors a core quintet completed by drummer Jas Kayser, bassist Daisy George, pianist Alex Hawkins, and flutist Ross Harris. The ensemble fuses modern jazz, hip-hop, spoken word, and neo-soul into a heady blend. A rotating roster of singers, rappers, poets, polemicists, electronicists, and instrumentalists joins them on record and stage. In performance Hutchings typically directs an ever-shifting ensemble of reed, woodwind, and brass soloists while remaining off his own instruments. The project’s first EP, In the Moment, Part 3, was recorded with American sound designer and composer Carlos Niño. August 2023 brought the advance singles “Apothecary,” which features Billy Woods, and “By Now (Accused of Magic),” recorded with poet Anthony Joseph. Both tracks appear on the debut album Flowers in the Dark, released that September on Hutchings’ Native Rebel Recordings imprint.
