Biography
Kojak consists of a French collective devoted to funky house sounds, built around techno DJ Gregorie Galian, soul singer Jayhem Racon and DJ Vas, the latter formerly of the hip-hop outfit Mauvais Graine. Their fusion of funk, disco, house and electro has drawn comparisons with other French filtered-disco projects, among them Cassius, Daft Punk, Air and Etienne De Crécy. Issued in the UK in September 1999, the group’s debut album Crime In The City earned widespread critical praise for its infectious mix of funky basslines, house and techno rhythms, and grooves modelled on 70s film and television soundtracks. Live performances helped Kojak cultivate a devoted audience in both France and the UK. By weaving together strands of 70s and 90s dance music, the trio recalls the emerging wave of acts typified by Basement Jaxx and Groove Armada, whose work stays soulful and inventive while remaining firmly dancefloor-oriented.
