Tristan Casara, a French producer rooted in deep house, works under the alias the Avener to fuse refined guitar phrases and spirited brass arrangements with vocal fragments rooted in folk and blues, all anchored by an inviting, throbbing club rhythm. He first issued disco-inflected filter house as Tyares beginning in 2005 and later devoted several years to behind-the-scenes collaborations that yielded multiple club successes, among them the 2012 track “Beautiful” credited to Mathieu Bouthier and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. In 2013 Casara launched the Avener project via “Fade Out Lines,” a house cut constructed around a sample of Phoebe Killdeer & the Short Straws’ “The Fade Out Line.” Gradual grassroots interest built until Capitol issued the single in September 2014; momentum then accelerated sharply, carrying the record onto charts throughout Europe and Australia while securing the top position in Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Spain. His first full-length effort, The Wanderings of the Avener, surfaced in early 2015 and featured reworkings and covers drawn from an eclectic roster that encompassed John Lee Hooker, Mazzy Star, Rodriguez, and Ane Brun. The album itself registered on multiple national tallies, peaking at number two on the French album charts.
