Kristy Lee Cook, a vocalist rooted in country music, achieved modest teenage recognition before securing her breakthrough opportunity in 2007. That year the 23-year-old Oregon native tried out for American Idol’s seventh season. Patriotic song choices and her country-gal persona carried her to a seventh-place result even as the judging panel repeatedly voiced disapproval.

Born in Seattle and raised amid rural southwestern Oregon, Cook balanced horseback riding with singing from an early age. At 15 she signed with manager Marty Rendleman, who had guided LeAnn Rimes at the outset of the latter’s career. Under his representation she obtained deals with RCA, joined the Arista Nashville roster, and contracted with Britney Spears’ production company, yet all three arrangements dissolved inside two years. Cook then moved to Dallas to keep building her career, landing modeling assignments and commercial spots while still recording. Her first studio album, Devoted, appeared in 2005 and mixed original material with covers.

American Idol reentered her path several years later, thrusting her into national view during the opening months of 2008. After her elimination on April 16th she stayed out of the spotlight until summer, when she joined a nationwide tour with fellow contestants and signed once more with Arista Nashville. Her debut single, “15 Minutes of Shame,” arrived that August, followed in September by the contemporary country album Why Wait.
