Kim Mazelle, the vocalist from Gary, resided near the Jacksons and regularly invited them over to perform songs she had composed. By the mid-'80s she had relocated to Chicago and established herself as a successful gospel vocalist. She also became a regular presence on the local house music scene, where Marshall Jefferson enlisted her to handle lead vocals with House to House across multiple recordings. While performing live at a house music event in London, she drew the attention of a Syncopate Records executive, who promptly offered her an international contract. In 1988 she reunited with producer Jefferson on the single "Useless (I Don't Need You Now)." The following year she joined Dr. Robert of the Blow Monkeys for the track "Wait." She went on to cut material for several imprints, including RCA, and partnered with Soul II Soul as well. Mazelle supplied the lead vocals on their 1990 hit single "Missing You." That same year she issued her own LP, Brillant!, through Capitol.
