Biography
In 2011, Brooklyn songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adam Schatz established Landlady as his solo outlet. His track record, both preceding and overlapping with the project, reflects extensive involvement in Brooklyn ensembles and artistic initiatives. He remains an active participant in Man Man and Father Figures, while also contributing to recordings by Vampire Weekend and Those Darlins. Schatz additionally created the new jazz database Search & Restore and co-produces N.Y.C. Winter Jazzfest. He captured his 2011 debut album Keeping to Yourself under the Landlady name, enlisting future bandmembers Ian Chang, Ian Davis, and Booker Stardrum. The effort revealed Schatz’s strange, soulful, art rock vision, which he and his collaborators refined through subsequent live shows. Once second guitarist Mikey Freedom Hart joined, the lineup became a quintet and secured a deal with Portland indie Hometapes, resulting in the July 2014 release of their second LP, Upright Behavior. Will Graefe assumed Hart’s position for The World Is a Loud Place, which appeared in early 2017.
