Biography
Hailing from southern Spain’s Andalusian heartland, where flamenco and bullfighting rank among longstanding regional customs, the Muñoz sisters Lola, Lucía, and Pilar formed the Spanish pop outfit Las Ketchup as daughters of a traditional flamenco guitarist based in Cordoba. Their sound fused Spanish rumba, Latin pop, and Jamaican reggae. The group’s debut single, “Aserejé,” took its title from the 1979 old-school rap multi-platinum seller and radio hit “Rapper’s Delight” by Sugarhill Gang, received its arrangement from Manuel “Queco” Ruiz, and quickly became a local smash. Their first album, Las Hijas del Tomate, appeared soon afterward.
