Biography
Laura Barrett, a Toronto-based singer and songwriter celebrated for her command of the kalimba—an African instrument also known as the thumb piano—further contributes to the indie pop collective the Hidden Cameras. Her solo material tends toward greater spareness, frequently relying on nothing beyond the kalimba and her own voice, while embracing a more idiosyncratic sensibility. She opened her individual career by delivering an unconventional interpretation of the grunge parody "Smells Like Nirvana" at a Weird Al tribute show. The song "Deception Island Optimists Club," by comparison, balances wry observation with stark desolation and earned finalist status for the SOCAN ECHO songwriting prize. Paper Bag Records signed Barrett, releasing her debut EP, Earth Sciences, in early 2008. To realize the full-length debut Victory Garden, which appeared in spring 2009, she assembled double bassist Richard Carnegie along with further Toronto-area musicians.
