Britain's Leo Kalyan crafts yearning, atmospheric R&B-infused pop and dance music as an emotive, electronic-based singer/songwriter rooted in East London. Born into a Muslim family, he divided his early years between London and Lahore while studying classical Indian music. His listening habits blended Bollywood sounds and global traditions with trip-hop and R&B from artists such as Massive Attack, Sade, and Janet Jackson. After several years of informal experiments, Kalyan committed in earnest around 2014 to self-taught production and posted his remixes—termed "refixes"—of Jessie Ware's "Running" and Duke Dumont's "Need U" on SoundCloud. Those uploads drew widespread blog notice and propelled him to the summit of the Hype Machine aggregator. During the same period he joined Karma Kid and MNEK for the track "Over You." His profile expanded sharply in 2015 upon issuing the Silver Linings EP, whose single "Fingertips" amassed over a million streams, went viral, and secured placement on the BBC 1Xtra playlist. The resulting momentum earned him PRS Music Foundation support, enabling a performance at Austin's SXSW in 2016.
