Biography
Vocalist Lisa Angell, frequently labeled France's answer to Susan Boyle, built a steady presence on the club circuit over many years before gaining sudden recognition in her forties through a spot on a television variety program. An avid music enthusiast since childhood, she claimed multiple radio talent competitions during her teenage years and, with parental support, enrolled at the Conservatoire de Nice. Her preference for interpreting material by Barbra Streisand, Jacques Brel, and Nicole Croisille over classical repertoire prompted her to depart after eight months, after which she devoted the next ten years to engagements at piano bars throughout the Côte d'Azur. A short-lived relocation to Paris yielded no career advancement and led her to consider abandoning performance, yet she secured ongoing residencies at the Casino Ruhl and at a gay bar owned by an acquaintance. Her breakthrough arrived via her role supporting magician Dani Lary on the touring comedy production Le Chateau des Secrets and subsequently on the broadcast Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde, where entertainer Patrick Sébastien noticed her and invited her to perform solo on his France 1 program Les Annees Bonheur. Her interpretation of Ginette Reno's "J'ai Besoin de Parler" impressed both viewers and label executives, securing a Polydor contract. Sébastien produced her first album, Les Divines, issued in 2011, which mixed several newly co-written pieces with renditions of Charles Aznavour's "Mourir d'Aimer," Bette Midler's "The Rose," and Edith Piaf's "Non Je Ne Regrette Rien."
