Liz Huett stepped into the foreground as a lead artist with her 2017 single "STFU & Hold Me" after years spent as a supporting vocalist. Earlier she had built experience behind the scenes, securing her first notable credit as a singer on Taylor Swift's 2010 release Speak Now. That exposure resulted in a recording agreement with Interscope whose earliest output surfaced in summer 2017 through the same single.

Adopted in infancy, Huett grew up in Riverside in Southern California within a household that supported her interest in performing. During her preteen years she took on film roles, appearing in the 1998 Kurt Russell picture Soldier and in Last Chance, Bryan Cranston's 1999 debut as director. Acting work continued sporadically into the mid-2000s until Huett redirected her energies toward music.

Swift played a decisive part in Huett's advancement. The two first met at a fan meet-and-greet, later encountered each other while Huett worked at a local radio station, and crossed paths again when Huett competed on the 2008 reality series Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann, which included a guest spot by Swift. Their connection became professional once Huett joined the Fearless tour as a backup singer. In 2010 she contributed to three tracks on Speak Now and appeared with Swift on the subsequent tour.

The Swift association opened doors for Huett's own career. She still supplied background vocals from time to time, including appearances on A Rocket to the Moon's 2013 album Wild & Free and on Crowder's 2014 LP Neon Steeple. Huett signed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell, where she wrote pop and country material, one result being the song "Put My Heart Down" on Sara Evans' 2014 album Slow Me Down. She next secured a contract with Interscope Records. In 2017 she performed "Rainbow" for the soundtrack of Leap!, the American title given to the 2016 French animated film Ballerina, yet her principal release remained the August single "STFU & Hold Me."
