Biography
Lucerin Blue aligns with the post-grunge alternative rock movement prevalent during the 1990s and early 2000s. What distinguishes these Canadian musicians from acts such as Linkin Park, 3 Doors Down, Default, and Eagle Eye Cherry lies in their lyrical approach, as they function as a Christian group. Yet the band members avoid overt proselytizing in their work. Their introspective words carry spiritual undertones without aggressive evangelism, requiring deeper exploration to uncover the religious convictions. Notably, the promotional material distributed by Tooth & Nail Records alongside the 2003 release of Tales of the Knife omitted any reference to Christian themes.
The ensemble originated in Goderich, Ontario, Canada, during 1997 under the moniker Natural Saint. Their robust yet tuneful post-grunge sound draws from multiple alternative rock sources, prominently including the Deftones along with Pearl Jam, Live, and the Foo Fighters. Frequent parallels are drawn to Creed as well as Linkin Park and Puddle of Mudd. Although hip-hop elements inform their music like many peers from that era, they steer clear of the rap-metal style exemplified by Rage Against the Machine, Limp Bizkit, Korn, and Kid Rock. Prior to adopting the Lucerin Blue name, they issued Black Pyramid while operating as Natural Saint; their follow-up effort, Tales of the Knife, was captured in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The Chordant label first put out Tales of the Knife in 2002, after which the group inked a deal with Seattle's Tooth & Nail, leading to a re-release in May 2003. At that point, the roster featured Justin Morgan handling lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Nathan Byle on lead guitar plus backing vocals, Paul Rennick providing bass and backing vocals, and Ryan Turner behind the drums. Worth mentioning is that Byle suffered the loss of half his left middle finger in a sawing mishap at age 15, yet this did not hinder his role as lead guitarist.
