Deriving their moniker from a historic Japanese war axe once brandished by the Yamabushi, or “warrior monks,” the Cleveland, OH quintet Masakari blends crustcore and D-beat while citing Discharge, His Hero Is Gone, and assorted Japanese hardcore acts among their chief influences. Formed in 2006, the band spent several years forging an underground presence before Southern Lord took notice and issued the group’s debut full-length, The Prophet Feeds, in 2010, an effort that drew widespread critical praise.
