Matthew Schuler first gained widespread attention in 2013 through his run as a contestant on the singing competition The Voice, where his command of pop, rock, and R&B material stood out. Born in Levittown, New York in 1992, he grew up in the Yardley section of Lower Makefield, Pennsylvania. His parents, Don and Dawn Schuler, both served as pastors at Genesis Community Church, a small congregation that frequently held services inside the family home, and it was from them that Schuler first absorbed his interest in singing. During his sophomore year of high school he joined the local indie-rock outfit Threshold, though he stepped away from the band in 2010 to focus on academics. The pull of music remained strong; after beginning studies at Westchester University he kept performing whenever time allowed, all while sustaining a strong grade-point average and suiting up for the school’s rugby squad. In 2013 he auditioned for The Voice and, out of thousands of hopefuls, earned a spot among the 14 vocalists featured on the Season Five premiere. He was also one of just two contestants selected by every member of the four-coach panel and the quickest entrant ever to turn all four chairs. Placed on Christina Aguilera’s team, Schuler impressed both the panel and viewers with his interpretations of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” One Direction’s “Story of My Life,” and Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman.”
