Meechy Darko, whose microphone presence combines a snarling tone with meticulous control, emerged in the 2010s as one-third of Flatbush Zombies, the Brooklyn rap trio that has embodied its home neighborhood through the charting albums 3001: A Laced Odyssey and Vacation in Hell. While Flatbush Zombies maintained its schedule, including membership in the Beast Coast collective, Meechy recorded scattered guest appearances and delivered his first solo album, Gothic Luxury, in 2022, whose stark and insistent production stands apart from the group’s sound.

A native Brooklynite born Demetri Simms, he began cutting occasional guest verses as Flatbush Zombies prepared its earliest mixtapes. Ahead of the group’s 2016 debut album reaching number ten on the Billboard 200, he had already appeared on Joey Bada$$’ “My Jeep” and Freddie Gibbs and Madlib’s “Piñata.” His most prominent features arrived in 2017 on Joey Bada$$’ All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ and A$AP Mob’s Cozy Tapes, Vol. 2: Too Cozy, both of which entered the Top Ten. A limited number of additional guest verses surfaced over the next several years until June 2022, when Meechy issued his debut solo single, the grim and fiery pro-Black anthem “Kill Us All (K.U.A.),” on the Loma Vista label. The follow-up singles “Get Lit or Die Tryin’” and “On God,” the latter featuring Freddie Gibbs and A-Trak, arrived within the next two months and led into the late-August release of Gothic Luxury, which also included contributions from Busta Rhymes, Black Thought, and Denzel Curry.
