Sweden's Moonbabies earned broad recognition inside and outside their homeland by channeling My Bloody Valentine and Miranda Sex Garden into refined, mesmerizing pop. Multi-instrumentalists Ola Frick and Carina Johansson form the duo, which charts unfamiliar ground in pop by artfully merging psychedelic textures, atmospheric electronics, and sweeping instrumental passages. They sharpened their vocal blend while busking on Copenhagen streets in 1996, then moved on to writing original songs and delivering covers of favorite Pixies, Beatles, and Simon & Garfunkel numbers for animated audiences. Their earliest demo recordings soon created a stir on Swedish National Radio, turning the pair into a sought-after touring act. After inking a deal with Duckweed Records, the 2000 debut June and Novas arrived to strong critical notices. The duo readied their first U.S. tour for spring 2001 and supported it with the We're Layabouts EP. While shaping the next album, A Bouncing Space Records issued the single "Standing on the Roof/Filtering the Daylight" in summer 2002. That follow-up, Orange Billboard, surfaced in early 2004 and prompted shows across Germany, Austria, Denmark, and Sweden. Mid-2005 saw the mini-album War on Sound, positioned as a preview of the third full-length Moonbabies at the Ballroom, which followed in spring 2007. Frick and Johansson then suspended Moonbabies activity for seven years, relocating to Berlin and welcoming their son in the interim. Drawing from Berlin's lively dance and house music community, the duo revived the project in 2015 with the experimental Wizards on the Beach.
