Biography
Detroit native MoZella gained widespread television airplay well before any radio outlets took notice. Her distinctive coffeehouse style—merging rich soul textures, alternative pop edges, and understated jazzy nuances—captured the attention of Mercedes-Benz's advertising team. The automaker featured her poignant track "Amazed" in the expansive 2005 "Framed Portraits" campaign, bringing the 23-year-old's remarkably developed songwriting to millions of living rooms. At age 14 she started guitar lessons simply to be near a particular instructor, yet the initial infatuation quickly passed while her musical passion remained. Her parents had already acquainted her with the Beatles—her top preference—plus Stevie Wonder and additional Motown recordings; she layered in her own admiration for Madonna, and within roughly twelve months these elements coalesced into a singular voice. At 15 she began performing in Detroit coffeehouses. Several months after finishing high school she relocated to Los Angeles, where she decorated cakes by day and played shows at night until crossing paths with Warren G. A short mentorship under the rapper gave her first hands-on experience with studios and demo work. Pitching that demo to record companies produced an abortive detour to London before she returned to Los Angeles and signed with Maverick, the imprint founded by her idol Madonna. In 2004 the label paired her with songwriter/producer Jude Cole, and sessions for her debut album commenced. The Mercedes-Benz spot aired the following year, one month before Maverick issued her self-titled debut EP; her first full-length album, I Will, arrived in 2006.
