Biography
Musta Paraati emerged in Finland as a gothic rock and post-punk ensemble that issued two pivotal albums during the first half of the 1980s and disbanded in 1985. Their sound fused ominous icy darkwave textures with propulsive, bass-driven punk energy, producing atmospheric soundscapes that paralleled the output of peers such as Killing Joke and Theatre of Hate.
The collective came together in 1982 and rotated through numerous personnel across its first incarnation, during which founding singer Jorma Vastelin passed away from cardiac arrest in 1993. They put out Peilitalossa in 1983 followed by Käärmeet in 1984 before dissolving the following year. Fresh attention generated partly by the post-punk resurgence of the early 2000s led Svart Records to re-release Peilitalossa in 2012, after which Musta Paraati regrouped three years later to perform several concerts across Finland. By 2018 the project formalized its return and signed with Cleopatra, which delivered the band’s first new recordings in decades under the fitting title Black Parade (Finnish translation: Musta Paraati). The eleven-song collection featured core returning members Saku Paasiniemi on guitar, Panda Nikander on bass, Yrjo Knuuttila on drums, and Jani Kääriäinen on keyboards, with 69 Eyes frontman Jyrki 69 taking lead vocals.
