Formed in Madrid during 2004, the electro-pop and glam outfit Nancys Rubias sprang from the efforts of Mario Vaquerizo, Juan Pedro, Miguel Balanzategui, and Susie Pop. The quartet maintains close ties to Fangoria: Vaquerizo serves as both Alaska’s husband and the band’s manager, while Nacho Canut supplies every lyric, and the group regularly appears as Fangoria’s opening act on tour. Launched on a whim as a playful stunt, Nancys Rubias push their tongue-in-cheek fixation with kitsch, androgynous sexuality, bubblegum punk, and disco into deliberate self-parody. Thanks to these insider connections, the conceptual project enjoys outsized press attention, and its releases have found a receptive audience. The suicide of Susie Pop in 2008 dealt a severe setback to the band’s carefree spirit, yet Nancys Rubias returned strongly with their 2011 album Ahora o Nunca, which stands as their fourth and most commercially successful effort to date.
