Formed in Stockholm, Sweden, Netherbird has fused elements of black metal, death metal, and further extreme variants including gothic and symphonic styles since 2004. That year the founding members Nephente on vocals, Bizmark handling guitars and keyboards, and Grim on guitars gathered to produce the promotional single Boulevard Black, issued the following year. Their initial recording ultimately opened the path to a pair of freely distributed Internet EPs in 2007, Blood Orchid marking Grim’s final appearance and Lighthouse Eternal, both of which preceded a deal with Pulverised Records. Until that contract, Netherbird had operated exclusively as a studio project, drawing on a succession of contributors that included Adrian Erlandsson of At the Gates and Cradle of Filth, Brice Leclercq of Nightrage and Dissection, Janne Saarenpää of the Crown, and others to complete the 2008 debut full-length The Ghost Collector. The next year, while tracking the subsequent album Monument Black Colossal, the group declared a stable lineup of Nephente, Bizmark, guitarist Nord, and bassist Tobias Gustafsson, formerly of Eucharist, and later confirmed Erik Röjås as permanent drummer following the 2010 release.
