Biography
Christopher Anthony Lunsford, a singer-songwriter and guitarist rooted in Virginia's country-folk tradition, catapulted from complete anonymity to the summit of both the pop and country charts in August 2023 after issuing his independently distributed track "Rich Men North of Richmond." Captured in a single-take outdoor session at his rural property using only one microphone, the track's raw presentation and focus on working-class frustrations triggered rapid online spread, which in turn cleared the path for his first full-length project, the 2024 album Hymnal of a Troubled Man's Mind.
Born in Farmville, Virginia, Lunsford took up songwriting in 2021 and adopted his grandfather's name, Oliver Anthony, as the vehicle for material exploring blue-collar hardship, rural existence, and his personal and political convictions. Accompanying himself on resonator guitar while delivering vocals in an intense, unrefined country-folk manner, he issued early singles through the Oliver Anthony Music imprint, capturing them at his off-the-grid property before sharing them digitally. These efforts quickly cultivated a bottom-up following among listeners who credited numbers such as "Ain't Got a Dollar," "Doggonit," and "I Want to Go Home" with easing their personal difficulties.
On August 8, 2023, he posted "Rich Men North of Richmond," an anthem for ordinary citizens that targeted inflation, taxes, stagnant pay, centralized authority, and aligned conservative perspectives. The upload achieved near-instant virality, ascending to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 within days and marking Anthony as the first performer to achieve that position without any previous chart entries. Although the song carried right-leaning content and a skeptical outlook, the artist asserted independence from any political camp and criticized both ends of the spectrum for exploiting his work. In the ensuing weeks, several of his prior releases also appeared on the charts amid the heightened interest.
March 2024 brought the independent arrival of the full-length Hymnal of a Troubled Man's Mind, which featured "Momma's Been Hurting" alongside several earlier songs. The project climbed to number 13 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart.
