Biography
The Brooklyn-based quartet Pistolera characterizes its sound with the term "Latin alt-folklorico," blending elements of classic Mexican traditions such as rancheras and corridos with modern indie rock approaches. The lineup consists of vocalist and guitarist Sandra Lilia Velasquez along with accordionist Maria Elena, bassist Inca B. Satz, and drummer Ani Cordero, positioning the group as an indie-era counterpart to Los Lobos while serving as an accessible entry point for those who consider artists like Manu Chao overly challenging. Established toward the end of 2004, the ensemble initially operated within New York's blending of indie and world music circles, sharing stages with groups including the Gypsy punk outfit Gogol Bordello and the neo-Afro-beat ensemble Antibalas before advancing promptly to international folk festival stages. After issuing a positively regarded live EP during the summer of 2005, the band put out its independently released first full-length effort, Siempre Hay Salida (roughly translated as There's Always a Way Out), which earned positive critical attention in autumn 2006.
