By the close of the 1980s, the Mexican alternative band Tijuana No came together, initially performing simply as No. The group fused rock with traditional Mexican sounds and distinguished itself through a steadfast commitment to indigenous causes, expressed in pointed, articulate lyrics. That stance surfaced clearly when the band appeared at Rock por Chiapas, a benefit concert supporting the Zapatista movement. Tijuana No issued its self-titled debut album in 1993 and followed it the next year with Transgresores de La Ley. Throughout the 1990s the act shared stages with both regional and American groups during extensive tours across California. The band’s third album, Contra-Revolución Ave, appeared in 1998.
